Here are 7 smart tips to help you reach 10,000 steps...
While 10,000 steps can feel like a huge number, it's very achievable. All it takes is a little planning and a desire to make small changes that deliver BIG pedometer counts.
1. Get to know your pedometer
Your pedometer is your go-everywhere walking buddy. To step out on the right foot, accurately measure and enter your step length. This is the distance covered in an average step, either from heel to heel or toe to toe. You can measure it with a tape measure.
2. Rome wasn't built in a day
Increasing your activity levels takes time. The good news is that walking gets easier the more you do it. If you can only manage walking continuously for 5 minutes at a time, slowly add an extra minute each day for a week. Then add an extra 2 minutes the following week. They are baby steps, but they’re all steps in the right direction.
3. Change old habits
Simple but effective ways to increase your daily steps include parking the car further away, taking the stairs, walking around the house while waiting for the kettle to boil and getting off at a train or bus stop before your usual one. You just need to be open to change.
4. Share the journey
You might have a colleague/friend feeling just like you. Together you can plan dedicated walking time to reach 10,000 steps.
5. Record your steps
Clip your pedometer on first thing in the morning and take it off last thing at night. Remember to log your all-day pedometer steps online at 10000StepsTasmania.com and track your team’s progress. Count every step – because every step counts!
6. Once you've reached 10,000 steps, keep moving onwards and upwards
Keep adding more and more steps. Improving your daily step count has many long-term health benefits and will have your team setting a cracking pace!
7. Set yourself mini step challenges
One that we suggest to many 10,000 Steps Tasmania participants is to set a number of steps you must take before going to bed. For example, take 500 steps from the time you turn off the TV until hopping into bed. Walk on the spot while brushing your teeth, unpack the dishwasher, check all the doors and windows are closed and check the freezer to see if anything needs defrosting.
Now it’s time for you to get creative and come up with some unique techniques to reach 10,000 steps. Be sure to share them with your Take a Bite Out of Tassie challenge teammates, and get a step ahead of your rival teams!
